As part of the traditional cultural event “The three- arched bridge”, in addition to the activities that have become traditional, such as the visual arts exhibition, the concert, theater performances, and short films, this year another special activity took place. This was a conversation with the renowned professor and painter Gazmend Leka from the University of Arts in Tirana, which was held at the Europe House in Tetovo and moderated by the Vice-Dean for Science of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Tetova, Professor, Nora Halimi.
The topic of the discussion was: Albanian Ballads and Legends: Approaches to the mythical thinking of other peoples, a topic that could not have been more fitting for this event, which carries the prefix “national.”
This activity was also attended by the Rector of the University of Tetova, Prof. Dr. Jusuf Zejneli, the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Prof. Dr. Salajdin Salihu, the Vice-Rector of the University of Tirana, Prof. Arian Paço, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor, Senad Abduli, professors and students from all three participating institutions, as well as art enthusiasts.
Gazmend Leka is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Albanian art, known for his extraordinary contribution as a painter, educator, and artistic director.
Gazmend Leka’s creativity is a rare example where the quantity of creation and the high artistic quality of his works coexist so harmoniously, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to art and to the calling of being a painter.
With many solo and group exhibitions held in Albania and abroad, numerous awards and recognitions, and many works part of national and international collections, it was an honor and a pleasure to have him as a guest at the University of Tetova.
The professor spoke about a part of his creative work related to illustrations of Albanian folkloric heritage, treated with a unique visual language, bringing to life Albanian ballads and legends that reflect mythical characters and important historical events. He also linked this discussion to the mythical thinking of other peoples.
Gazmend Leka’s participation in this event was a source of inspiration for all of us. He reminded us that art is not just an aesthetic expression, but also a powerful form of communication and building bridges not only between people but also across time.
